DoubleTree by Hilton, in central Christchurch, has taken a significant step toward sustainability by installing a SoilFood™ machine, previously used at their Queenstown Hilton property. Their commitment to the waste hierarchy goes beyond just processing food waste. Surplus food from the hotel is first redirected to Kairos Food Rescue, ensuring that edible food is used to help feed those in need. Food that cannot be rescued is processed in the on-site SoilFood™ system, where the nutrient-rich output is used to enrich the hotel’s gardens and green spaces, reducing the need for synthetic fertiliser.
By implementing this full-circle approach to organic waste, DoubleTree Christchurch is reducing landfill waste, creating a valuable resource, and reducing waste disposal fees. The SoilFood™ machine, relocated from Queenstown to Christchurch, is now running efficiently, helping the hotel achieve its sustainability goals and enhancing the local environment with its waste reduction capabilities.
This initiative underscores DoubleTree Christchurch’s dedication to sustainability, with the SoilFood™ system playing a key role in both waste management and environmental responsibility. By prioritising food rescue first and followed by regeneration, the hotel sets an example for the hospitality industry, demonstrating how businesses can integrate waste reduction into their operations while contributing to social and environmental good. Sustainably remains proud to support this initiative, championing waste minimisation in all its forms.
